III / THE STORY

The tandoor that came back.

A tandoor oven back in an Okubo side street. A fried egg over rice, the one-coin dal bhat of the old days. The shop moved once, then returned to the same spot in Hyakunincho. In a kitchen where smoke rises, the baking continues today.

Inside the tandoor — naan clinging to the clay wall over glowing coals

Hyakunincho, Shinjuku. A two-minute walk from Okubo Station, five from Shin-Okubo. One tandoor serves two countries — Indian and Nepali cooking. Tandoor-baked dishes, dal bhat, momo, biryani, ten kinds of naan. Open straight through from eleven in the morning to eleven at night.

The tandoor and dal bhat

No record gives the founding year. Regulars' blogs remember when a dal bhat set cost one coin — 500 yen. The house rule, confirmed across food diaries: a fried egg goes on top of the rice. In the winter of 2022 the shop moved once, then returned to its original spot in Hyakunincho by the end of that year. From eleven in the morning to night, the tandoor and the dal bhat carry on.
